THE

BREED

Border Collies are energetic dogs that are fun, love learning and love people.

Border collies get their name as they were initially bred on the border of Scotland and England.

Dogs are pretty smart as species but no breed can beat the Border Collie in intelligence as they were bred to be independent problem solvers capable of solving complex tasks.

Google The worlds smartest dog “Top Dog”and you will find a wonderful 60 minute story on a beautiful dog called Chaser and a Physchologist but the name of John Pilley who has spent several years studying the intelligence of dogs.

Because these dogs are so smart, it means they pick up on everything and learn very quickly. This means you need to train them right away so that they do not develop bad habits like nipping, barking and yelping.

Border Collies have been especially bred to chase and organise animals. This modified predoratry behaviour incorporates the beginning of the hunt (stalking, crouching, nipping), but without killing.

Border Collies make particularly good herders thanks to their intelligence and independence. Therefore you may find your new Border Collie herding the kids, chickens and other dogs in the park.

Border Collies can move swiftly and due to the space between the shoulder blades can crouch in a catlike position which lets the dog slither while staying low to the ground.

Another trick is the eye of the Border Collie, the intense stare intimidates the livestock and helps the dog herd and control the animals. You will find your Border Collie giving you the stare when you have something delicious they want.

Don’t expect to lay around the house with a Border Collie, the smarter the breed the easier it is to get bored. This means if its a rainy day you need to have a system that can keep your Border Collie stimulated, that can be as easy as giving their toys names and asking them to retrieve them, get them using their intelligence.

A controlled form of exercise with tasks rather that just taking them for a uncontrolled run in the park best suits a Border Collie.
